Localisation of a major DS title for a juggernaut of Tokyo’s video game scene (June to October 2006)
An enormously important step in my career as a translator specialising in video games. I accompanied the entire production cycle that covered a period of 9 weeks – from the briefing through the localisation to the quality assurance at the company headquarters in Tokyo.
I was able to follow the This big player of the video game industry gave me the chance to follow the entire development process first hand. A defining experience that furthered my understanding of what drives language coordinators, language assistants, QA leads, in-house translators, tester and all of the other involved parties and what they expect of translators.
The insights into the absolutely huge video game arcades, technology district, karaoke bars and quirky shops and bars of the vibrant, crazy Japanese capital where pop culture, cosplay, funfairs and virtual worlds seem to fuse with reality were no less impressive. By the end of this project, I felt that I had established myself as a video game translator at the very core of the gaming industry.
